India has been a dumping ground for all developed countries over the past two decades. Now with a booming economy, an equal amount of waste is being produced domestically. All this waste is polluting the environment and posing a health risk to millions of citizens in India. Besides India is among the top 5 countries for CO2 emissions. Keeping in mind all these environmental risks, it is our general expectation that this issue would be on top of the Indian government's agenda. In the process of finding out the Indian government's stance on this issues, I came across a website which is run by a group of people who have taken it upon themselves to fight for a non toxic environment(http://www.toxicslink.org/)
“We are a group of people working together for environmental justice and freedom from toxics. We have taken it upon ourselves to collect and share information about the sources and dangers of poisons in our environment and bodies, as well as about clean and sustainable alternatives for India and the rest of the world.”
Some of the key features of this website are
- Parliamentary Update: In this section the website provides information about the discussions in the Indian parliament on environmental issues. I found this page very intriguing as it gives an insight into the stance of the government .
- Recent press Releases: This section provides environmental related news in the Indian media. Click here to read one of the most shocking reports in the media right now in relation to the governmental policies on the environment.
- Recent Alerts: The website also gathers recent alerts about activities in India that create toxins in the environment.
- Right to Information Act : I noticed the Toxics Link group use the "Right to Information Act"effectively to gather informations about the waste produced locally and the waste being dumped into India.
